Quirk Genetics and Inheritance

Quirks are more than extraordinary powers; they’re biological characteristics that can be passed from one generation to another. The more Quirks become established within humanity, the more their connection to genetics and heredity become increasingly important to understand how they developed and evolved. Children can inherit aspects of their parents’ powers, resulting in abilities that might similarly resemble those of the adults, combine aspects of  both, or manifest in a completely opposite and different way, causing them to slowly evolve to be even more powerful.

The inheritance of Quirks also helps to explain the massive diversity of abilities found throughout the entire world. An individuals Quirk is influenced by their genetic background, resulting in families developing distinctive combinations of powers across multiple generations. However, Quirk inheritance is not always straightforward, and the ability a child develops cannot necessarily be predicted simply by viewing their parents. Understanding this relationship between genetics, hereditary and Quirk manifestation provides an important foundation for understanding how Quirks developed alongside humanity.

What Is Quirk Inheritance?

Quirk inheritance is where a child will inherit either the mothers Quirk, the fathers Quirk, a mix of both Quirks, or something different. It’s genetically passed down usually, just like our hair color, eye color or nationality. Essentially its dominant and recessive genes. If the Quirk involves dominant genes, then typically the Quirk will be passed down to the child, but if it’s a recessive gene than the Quirk may not pass down. A case like this is Izuku Midoriya, who was born Quirkless even though his mother had a telekinesis Quirk and his father had a Fire Breathing Quirk. The author potentially could have followed Mendelian Inheritance, its defining characteristic is heavily associated with one singular gene. A canon example of genetic inheritance is Shoto Todoroki, who inherited both his mothers ice Quirk, and his fathers fire Quirk, making Shoto capable of using ice with his left and fire with his right side. 

However, Quirk inheritance does not seem to be completely predictable and dependable. A child may inherit characteristics from either parent, or a combination of both, but this technically doesn’t mean that every characteristic will be projected the same way. Siblings can noticeably possess different Quirks despite having the same parents. An example is obviously the Todoroki family. Natsuo and Fuyumi have their mothers Quirk, their older brother Toya has their fathers Quirk, and Shoto has a mash-up of both fire and ice. This demonstrates that Quirk inheritance involves more complexity than simply receiving a direct copy of a parent’s ability. The end result of the Quirk can have its own characteristics, strengths and limitations, making each person’s power unique. Therefore, family genetics can influence a person’s Quirk without completely predicting what that Quirk might become.

How Quirks Are Passed Down

Quirks can be passed from parents to their children through biological inheritance, enabling characteristics of the parent’s Quirk to appear in their child. However, this process is not as simple as a child receiving a direct copy of the Quirk. Children may inherit certain characteristics from either parent, with combinations possibly producing a distinct Quirk. Shoto Todoroki is a prime example, inheriting his mothers ice Quirk and his fathers fire Quirk allowing him to use both abilities. Katsuki Bakugo is another example of his parental characteristics enabling his Explosion Quirk, his mothers glycerin-like skin and fathers acidic sweat contribute good characteristics.

Inheritance can also produce substantive variation between siblings. Children from the same parents can develop somewhat different Quirks, showing that inheritance definitely does not guarantee an identical solution. The Todoroki siblings are a demonstration of this, as Toya, Natsuo, Fuyumi and Shoto all possess completely different powers even though they all have the exact same parents. Therefore, a child’s Quirk can differ from what could be expected based solely on their parents, though the exact process behind said variations is not exactly and completely explained in canon. 

Quirk inheritance is also not guaranteed, Izuku Midoriya was born Quirkless, without an ability, even though both of his parents had their own Quirks. His mother, Inko, can attract objects to herself, essentially telekinesis, and his father, Hisashi, is said to have fire breathing. Izuku shows that having Quirked parents does not actually mean their child will eventually develop a Quirk, further highlighting the complexity and unpredictability of Quirk inheritance.

In this way, while parental Quirks can provide characteristics that influence a child’s eventual ability, they literally cannot automatically determine precisely what the power will be. Inheritance therefore stays as an important, but not completely predictable, part of Quirk development across generations.

Quirk Factors

Quirk Factors basically refer to the collective physical, biological, and genetic traits that make up someone’s Quirk. Some people may view this as three key components of Quirk Factors, Biological Engine, Hereditary traits, and Vulnerability.

A biological engine includes the ability, also containing the unseen internal and external bodily mechanisms needed to make that power activate and work safely. Hereditary or genetic traits are passed down over generations, parents to children as explained in the above topic, determining how abilities can manifest or combine across families. And vulnerability means that certain Quirks like Shota Aizawa’s Erasure and him needing to blink can temporarily stop the activation of a Quirk factor. And specific attacks may possibly damage these internal mechanisms and either temporarily or even permanently disable someone’s power. 

The Quirk Factor may therefore  be understood as the underlying biological foundation that allows a person’s Quirk to work. A Quirk is simply just not an ability that exists separately from the holder’s physical body; its manifestation is ultimately connected to the actual characteristics and biological systems of the individual who possesses it. This is particularly very important because different types of Quirks need their users to interact with their own abilities in completely different and unique ways. Some Quirks may require specialised body structures, meanwhile others depend on particular physical processes or conditions before they can be activated safely and effectively.

The concept may also help demonstrate why Quirks can have physical and big limitations. A Quirk might be incredibly powerful, but the user’s body can still have massive restrictions on how frequently or intensely that ability can be used. Izuku Midoriya is a prime example with his Quirk as he had to first build his physical body up, then he could only use a very low percent of his Quirk before he managed to build it up, therefore he had very big limitations on his Quirk and body. These limitations can end up resulting in exhaustion, physical damage or even other consequences when the body is pushed way beyond what it can safely withstand. The Quirk Factor therefore connects an individual’s ability to their physical body, helping further explaining why Quirks are biological characteristics rather than simply supernatural abilities.

The animated series formally discusses Quirk factors during episode 12 of season 4. It’s titles “Unforeseen Hope” and its during the Shie Hassaikai arc briefing. In the manga its discussed in chapter 135, but All For One explains it deeper a whole 152 chapters later in chapter 287. 

Combining Parental Quirks

Combining basically means joining or merging two or more things to make a single or different unit, group or whole. In the My Hero Academia series, it establishes that children inherit their Quirks from their parents through a system the basically mirrors something like real-world single-gene genetic inheritance. Obviously combining parent’s Quirks doesn’t always create a completely new and exotic power, a child may instead directly inherit just one of their parent’s exact Quirks, or even manifest side-by-side traits.

You might be asking “What is the difference between inheriting a Quirk and combining characteristics”.

Well, inheriting a Quirk means gaining a direct copy or distinct lone version from one or the other parent, while combining characteristics means a child’s Quirk merges certain elements from both parents into an entirely new and exotic, blended ability.

A child can inherit characteristic traits from both parents. Biologically children get 23 chromosomes from their mother, and 23 from their father, totalling in a good 46 chromosomes. It also demonstrates dominant and recessive traits. This is a good comparison from real world life to the life within My Hero Academia. Shoto Todoroki is a really good example of this as well, his father has fire, his mother has ice, and Shoto has a mix of both, making him able to use both fire and ice. Katsuki Bakugo is another good example, his mother having glycerin like skin and his father having acidic sweat, it makes a perfect mix to create Bakugo’s explosion Quirk.

However, the characteristics inherited from each parent do not actually need to contribute equally to their child’s Quirk. One parent’s traits might actually be more noticeable or even influential than the others, while in other cases both parent’s traits are pretty equally represented. The resulting Quirk can therefore have it’s own functions, strengths, limitations and weaknesses rather than easily being two parental powers placed together. This can make each combination entirely different depending on the individual.

Mutations and Variations

Usually when discussing Quirks, variation means a slightly altered or maybe even an evolved version of a power or characteristic instead of a direct copy. Some key meanings of Quirk variations might include things like inherited changes, upgraded or even downgraded power and functional differences. A child’s Quirk can differ from both parent’s as explained before. A Quirk can absolutely retain characteristics of a family while developing differently and into something super unique. Variations are different from simply inheriting one parent’s Quirk because it fundamentally alters, combines or even rewrites the genetic traits or characteristics instead of just passing one down clearly. 

A Quirk mutation (or mutant-type Quirk) in the anime series and manga is essentially a physical power that alters the user’s body shape, whether that be extra limbs, animal like appearances or just odd looking features on the body, and sometimes the Quirk remains constantly active. The My Hero Academia canon doesn’t exactly use the words “Quirk Mutation” as a standard term. Instead the series actually explain specific, separate linguistic concepts when discussing biological mechanisms and even categories for these powers. Official canon terminology includes Heteromorphic, like Spinner’s Quirk, which makes him look like a lizard-type animal rather than looking human, in official databooks and specific plot points “Mutation” os used as a standard scientific context to basically explain a child’s power manifesting a power completely different to their parent’s characteristics, like Eri’s rewind Quirk, which is canonically specified as this time of incredibly rare genetic anomaly. 

A mutation biologically can mean both a completely new and rare Quirk, or a significant and catastrophic change to an already existing hereditary trait. 

Quirkless Individuals

Quirkless individuals are those born without supernatural powers and abilities. My Hero Academia distinguishes those with and without Quirks usually through a very specific biological marker in their anatomy, the number of joints in their pinky toes. Those born with two joints are Quirkless, while those born with one joint in their pinky toes possess Quirks. Quirklessness is something a person is born with.

Even if two parents have a Quirk, their child may still be born Quirkless, like Izuku Midoriya. His mother has similar powers to telekinesis, and his father has fire breathing, though Izuku was born without any powers. And a child whos parents are both Quirkless can still be born with a Quirk due to dormant past characteristics like from their grandparents. Eri is a prime example of this as her parents didn’t have Quirks, but she was born with a Rewind Quirk, her ability manifested and was created via a spontaneous genetic mutation. 

A character can even lose their Quirk and become completely Quirkless, usually due to Quirk Theft, Quirk-destroying Drugs, or even Exhaustion or Transfer. Quirk Theft is like when All For One stole the Quirks from certain characters in the manga and series, Quirk-destroying Drugs are usually shot from a gun, like when Amajiki or Mirio were hit, and Exhaustion or Transfer usually happens when someone either transfers their Quirk to a new user, like One For All, and when its embers slowly die. 

In the main storyline which is around the 21st century in real-world time, about 80% of the world’s population possess Quirks, while the remaining 20% do not possess a Quirk. Though when Quirks first began, it was completely different as Quirk holders weren’t as common and often. Being Quirkless does not actually mean being incapable of achieving certain things. Schools like U.A. hold special classes like general studies or business class, most likely used for those without Quirks. Advantages those without powers might have include not having to worry about random activation or negative reactions to certain things about their Quirk, but disadvantages mean those with the dream of becoming a pro-hero aren’t actually able to reach that goal. Being Quirkless ended up meaning those people were the minority, and are often made fun of and mocked for not having a power. 

Generational Changes

As Quirks continued to be inherited by new generations, their characteristics and traits began to differ and develop and change in increasingly different ways. The combination of traits from different parents and family lines meant that children may possess abilities that were not exactly copies of either parent. Over multiple generations, this contributed to a much larger range of Quirk manifestations, with some abilities ending up becoming increasingly complex in their functions and characteristics.

However, complexity automatically should not be confused with increased strength. An ability having more functions does not actually need to mean that it is more powerful and stronger than the Quirks of previous generations. Some powers may end up more complicated and difficult to use or control without being more destructive. This distinction is important when discussing the development of Quirks, as the series focuses not only on their potential possible power, but also on the difficulties and complications that can arise from increasingly complex abilities.

The Todoroki family provides an amazing example of these generational differences. Shoto’s mother and father, Endeavor and Rei, have very different and opposite Quirks, while the children they end up having develop individual abilities containing different characteristics from their family. Shoto is particularly notable for inheriting both the fire and ice from both his parents, while his siblings have completely different powers. This demonstrates that even within the same family, inheritance can almost always produce different outcomes.

Conclusion

Quirk genetics and inheritance provide a very important foundation for understanding how Quirks work, develop, change, and continue across generations. Although Quirks can mostly be inherited from parents, the process is not the same as inheriting an exact copy as a child, and not every child has a Quirk or comes from Quirk holding parents. As explained throughout the article, characteristics from both parents may contribute to a child’s Quirk, creating combinations and variations that can be incredibly and significantly different from their abilities. And the difference between siblings clearly further demonstrate that inheritance does not always produce identical and exact outcomes, while the existence of Quirkless individuals clearly state that possessing Quirked parents does not guarantee that a child will develop an ability. 

The Quirk Factor further shows that Quirks are connected to the biology and physical traits of their holders, instead of functioning as completely separate supernatural powers. As Quirks continue to pass through different generations and types of people, their increasing diversity and complexity become a very important feature of modern society. However, a lot of aspects of Quirk biology remain unexplained, including the precise mechanisms responsible for inheritance, variation, and generational development. 

Ultimately, Quirk genetics helps to explain why the world of My Hero Academia contains such a massive variety and amount of abilities or powers. It also demonstrates that even while hereditary plays an important role in determining an individual’s Quirk, it does not actually completely define what that Quirk will become.
