Quirks: An Introduction

A Quirk is a superhuman natural power that only 80% of the My Hero Academia world possesses. The other 20% remains Quirkless (without powers). Often, children will have their Quirks start to show at around the age of four. Although with certain Quirks like heteromorphs or the Luminescent Baby, the Quirk will show at birth.

The word “Quirk” came from a mother who had given birth to a boy who was discriminated and abused for having a “Meta Ability” as not everyone had one to begin with. The mother tried to encourage and comfort her son named Chikara Yotsubashi by telling him his power was a Quirk, which loosely translates to individuality. Though she was scorned and later murdered for the use of said words, but she was later recognized as “The Mother of Quirks”.

Basic characteristics of Quirks include different power types. They could be physical strength, mental strength (like thinking etc), physical body mutations and more. Usually you can tell what Quirks are by a joint in the pinky toe. If you have one joint in the pinky, that means you would have a Quirk, but those who are Quirkless have two joints in the pinky toe. You can also check in a medical or research clinic by having a look at the biological “Quirk Factor”.

The difference between having a Quirk and using it is majorly different. By law within the show you may only use your Quirk against people as a professional hero but cant use it to cause real harm to citizens etc. They must follow strict guidelines, laws and police orders, whilst those who do harm innocent people or use their Quirks against said laws, police orders etc are considered villains.

The main difference is using a Quirk is different as you have to consciously activate it and keep it under control why just having it is like a chemical imbalance.
